Photo Engraving

Photo engraving is the process of engraving using photographic techniques. This unique and innovative concept is widely used for replicating graphic objects by transferring the image photographically onto a plate or some other surface and then engraving. Photo engraving is a very popular process and is used to create printing plates, presentation plaques, printed circuit boards, embossing dies boards and foil-stamping dies.

The photo engraving technique involves using a photosensitive material, known as photoresist. This material, which is resistant to acids or other engraving objects, is employed to a metal to be etched. It is then exposed to light, normally heavy ultraviolet rays, through a photographic negative. This helps it to harden at places where the negative permits light to pass. It is then washed in a solvent that eliminates the untempered components, thereby developing the photoresist. After this process, the metal to be carved is exposed to any etching compound or acid which liquefies the exposed parts of the metal.

One of the popular methods of photo engraving results in a shallow depression in the metal. This method is mainly used for printed circuit boards, decorative purposes or for intaglio printing plates. The etching is usually done on brass or copper. Another method of engraving is used to make a deep etching with sloped shoulders. For this process, the metal, mostly magnesium or zinc, is placed facedown and a combination of soap-like oil and nitric acid is poured onto it. This method of engraving is popular for making embossing dies, foil stamping dies and printing plates.

Today, there are several companies that utilize the latest photo engraving technology to replicate an image on gold, silver, brass, copper, acrylic and stainless steel. The most popular photo engraving products available in stores include gold and silver pedants, name cardholders, promotional key rings, compact mirror, badges, lighters and acrylic plaques.
