Laser Engraving

Laser engraving is a method using lasers to mark, engrave or etch on an object. Laser engraving techniques are considered technical, and in most cases, a computer system is utilized to operate the laser head. Even though the whole process is considered complex, one can achieve very clean and precise engravings. Laser engraving does not include tool bits that contact the engraving surface and wear out. This is a benefit when compared to the other engraving technologies where bit heads need to be changed frequently.

Laser engraving is done by focusing a parallel beam of light (laser) through a lens to a pinpoint where the heat produced is vaporizing the subject material. Laser engraving techniques are more widely used for specifically designed laser-able materials. These include novel metal alloys and polymer.

Laser engraving has several advantages when compared to conventional engraving methods. As laser engraving uses a beam of light as a tool, it only produces a non-contract mark that results in less wear and tear on tooling and other related expenses. There is also less chance for product deformation and damage. Another advantage is that lasers are much faster than other conventional methods of product imprinting and also provide better versatility in material choices. Laser engraving can be applied to wood, plastic, glass; coated metals and laser cut machine gaskets.

In certain cases where physical modification of a surface by engraving is unsuitable, there is an alternative way known as laser marking. Laser marking is a broad term which covers a wide range of surfacing techniques such as hot-branding and printing.

Today?s laser engraving equipments are affordable, easy to use and maintain. Most of the latest laser engraving equipment also offer greater speed and adaptability.
